  • Inspect motorized and mechanical equipment, such as heavy, medium, and light duty vehicles, tractors, loaders,jetters and emergency vehicles; 
  • Diagnose and repair trucks and automotive on-board computer systems; 
  • Diagnose all types of malfunctions and determines extent of necessary repairs; 
  • Overhaul gasoline and diesel powered equipment; repair and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials andclutches; 
  • Diagnose and repair fuel systems including carburetors, injectors, fuel pumps, strainers, fuel lines, fuel tanks andgauges; 
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems including starters, alternators, regulators, batteries, relays, lighting andswitches; 
  • Overhaul and repair hydraulic, air and electric brake systems on light, medium, heavy duty vehicles and trailers; 
  • Diagnose and repair different types of ignition systems, such as passenger cars, light trucks as well as on and off-road equipment and trailered equipment; 
  • Repair and maintain cooling systems on light, medium and heavy duty vehicles, cars, trucks and emergencyvehicles; 
  • Repair special equipment and vehicles, including police, fire, public works, and off-road equipment; 
  • Perform preventive maintenance on City owned vehicles and equipment at the City shop. Some repairs andmaintenance may be done in the field;
  • Document repair activities, inspections, and maintenance details in the City’s enterprise asset management systemas part of work order processing and equipment tracking.

Qualification Guidelines

EXPERIENCE: At least three years experience as a journey level mechanic, performing repair of gasoline and diesel equipment.

EDUCATION: Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by additional training inautomotive equipment repair.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: A valid California Class C driver’s license with a safe driving record, which must bemaintained throughout employment in this class, is required at the time of appointment. A California Class A driver’slicense is required within 12 months of appointment as a condition of passing probation.

Employees in this position who possess a California Class A driver’s license are subject to mandatory drug and alcoholtesting as required by the Department of Transportation. Applicants selected will be given a conditional offer ofemployment pending the outcome of a post-offer physical and drug screen. Additionally, applicants will be required toprovide written authorization allowing the City to contact previous employers to determine if the applicant haspreviously tested positive for drugs or alcohol, or refused to submit for testing. Must obtain certification meeting South Coast Air Quality Management District requirements for the use, recovery, and recycling of refrigerants in mobile airconditioning systems within the first six months of employment.
