ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER 
Practical Exam and Interviews will be held on an ongoing basis
This position is eligible for appointment at step 1, $50,086.40 annually. County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for Step Placement in Accordance with Comp Ord 1.3.5.

Future Salary Increases

** June 2026 – 7.72% increase to base pay (3.0% Across-the-Board + 4.72% Market Adjustment) 

** June 2027 – 7.62% increase to base pay (2.90% Across-the- Board + 4.72% Market Adjustment)

In addition to the base salary listed above, employees in this job class shall be paid fifty cents ($0.50) per hour premium while tree trimming, and twenty-five cents ($0.25) per hour premium while operating a motor sweeper.

The County of San Diego is currently accepting applications for Road Maintenance Worker – Road Option, to fill vacancies in various locations within the County.

Road Maintenance Workers are assigned to the Department of Public Works, and perform routine County roadway repair, roadway maintenance duties, manual labor, and other related road maintenance support work.

The Practical Exam
The Practical Exam is designed to assess applicants’ skills and abilities to perform:
1.   Shoveling
2.  Fiber Roll
3.  Hand tool selection and truck loading.

Please be sure to wear outdoor work clothes including long pants, gloves, and protective boots during this exam.

Hiring Process and Timeline:
The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.

Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of experience performing general manual labor in a construction, maintenance, or repair setting.

Notes

  • A valid California Class B permit is required at the time of appointment and a Class B driver’s license must be obtained by the end of the probationary period.  A Class B driver’s license and a current medical card must be maintained throughout employment in this class.  This license must include a tank endorsement and no transmission or air brake restrictions.
  • Employees are subject to random drug testing per Department of Transportation guidelines.
